World Health Organization Faces Significant Workforce Reduction After United States Financial Withdrawal

This international health agency disclosed plans to reduce its staff by almost a fourth – amounting to more than two thousand jobs – before mid-2026.

Funding Shortfall Prompts Major Restructuring

The move follows following the United States, previously the organization's biggest contributor, pulled out funding previously this year.

The US government was contributing approximately 18% of the organization's overall budget, causing a substantial budgetary shortfall.

Projected Workforce Reductions

According to internal projections, the staff will decrease from 9,401 positions in early 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

The reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, retirements, and regular departures.

"The past year has been one of the most difficult in WHO's history, as we have navigated a challenging but necessary journey of prioritization and restructuring," stated the agency's director-general.

Budget Gap Persists

The Geneva-based body currently confronts a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to almost a quarter of its required funding.

This figure marks an reduction from a previous projected shortfall of $1.7bn noted in spring.

Excluded Funding

These financial projections exclude an additional 1.1 billion dollars in expected funding from current discussions with various donors.

A representative for the agency stated that the present unfunded part of the biennial budget is in fact lower than in earlier years, attributing this to several factors:

  • A smaller total budget
  • The launch of a fresh donor outreach effort
  • Higher in member states' required fees

This realignment initiative is now approaching its end, allowing the organization to progress with a renewed structure.
