Former Down Under Politician Sentenced for More Than Five Years for Sexual Offenses

One-time Australian politician sentenced of assaulting two individuals he met through professional activities was given to five years and nine months in prison.

The former official, forty-four, has been in custody since July after a jury determined his guilt of raping a victim and sexually abusing another, in different occasions in 2013 and 2015.

The defendant represented the seaside community of the district in the NSW parliament from 2011. He stepped down as a political party minister when accusations came to light in 2021 but resisted resigning from parliament and was re-elected in last year.

Sentencing Details

Justice the judicial figure took into account Ward's disability of vision impairment in the judgment and determined "no alternative punishment other than incarceration is appropriate".

Ward, who participated via digital means at the courthouse, will serve at no less than nearly four years in detention before he can request conditional freedom.

The judge said the legal system needs to "issue a clear statement to potential criminals that illegal behaviors of this nature will be met with significant consequences".

Additionally stated the defendant had "avoided punishment for a decade and experienced freedom without a treatment or penalty for his actions during that period".

After his conviction, the individual launched a failed legal bid to stay in his position and stepped down moments before the members could expel him.

Representatives has indicated before he intends to challenge the guilty verdict.

Incident Details

Ward's nine-week trial in the state court learned that he brought a intoxicated teenager to his home in the first incident and attacked him three times, despite his attempts to oppose.

In 2015, he sexually assaulted a young government employee at his home after a function at government offices.

Ward had maintained the second incident never occurred, and that the first victim was misremembering their interaction from the earlier year.

However, prosecutors argued that significant resemblances in the statements of the victims, who had no connection to each other, showed they were being honest.

A jury considered for three days before returning the convictions.

The political exit led to a special election in his constituency in September, which was claimed by the Labor candidate.
